Scouting in Action
Plunger Canoe Racing with Pack 152 in Oakley
For their September Pack Meeting, Diablo Sunrise District Pack 152 in Oakley had a plunger canoe race. Inspired by a pack meeting he saw in North Carolina, Den Leader Sean Gendreau organized the activity so scouts could work as teams. “Basically teams of 6 take turns rowing across the floor. We built the canoes out of 3/4 inch plywood and furniture dollies. Home Depot sold us 8 plungers and donated 8 more.” Sean said. Lily, who is in the Arrow of Light Den, thought this was a great pack meeting idea. “It was hard to canoe, but it was fun. People weren't using teamwork at first, and the floor was slippery. We came in third place in the end,” she said.

SSS Sea Fox scouts practicing pipe patching
SSS Makai scout in fire fighting suit
Over 130 youth from across the Bay Area attended Safety at Sea 2023. Scouts learned how to use dry suits, flares, fight fires, various towing situations for boats, and even competed in a fire hose game. The scouts also learned how to patch pipes, which has practical carry over if your boat has a leak.
This safety event takes place yearly at Yerba Buena Island, U.S. Coast Guard, San Francisco, and is a great chance for scouts to complete parts of the Ordinary and Able safety requirements for their rank advancement.
Thanks to the USCG and USCG Aux for hosting and we can't wait for next year's Safety at Sea.
