For Everyone
Reminder: Youth Protection Rules Change
September 1
As of September 1, an important rule update for Youth Protection rules will take effect. Effective September 1, ONLY registered adult leaders with an adult, fee-required, position in that specific unit may attend any overnight Scouting activity.
Exception for Cub Scout Packs: the Cub Scout's parents or legal guardian may also attend the overnight event. Registered adult leader(s) must be present any time the parents/guardians are with scouts other than their own child/ward. Siblings under the age of 18 are permitted to attend; siblings over the age of 18 are not permitted to attend unless they are registered adult leaders in that specific Cub Scout Pack.
Thank you for everything you do to help make Scouting the safest youth activity.

District-Wide Fall Recruiting Event - Scout Zone @ Sunday Streets
October 15
Get excited! We have partnered with SF Sunday Streets to secure a whole city block during the Excelsior Sunday Streets (Oct 15) event for our 'Scout Zone'. Each unit is being asked to run a fun, youth-engaging activity to show off the best side of scouting -- and to recruit new scouts. We've connected with every unit -- and now we need you to let us know what activity you'll be doing ! If you haven't already, please let Larry Morales (District Membership Chair) and Paul Lanzi (District Commissioner) know about your planned activity!
Scouting for Food: Kickoff, Door Hanger and Collection Dates
October 15, November 4 and 11
Every unit has been contacted about the Scouting for Food Kickoff Party, coming up on October 15 (4-6pm @ SF-Marin Food Bank). Francois Chadwick will be organizing our District's participation this year, and we're aiming for bigger and better! At the Kickoff Party, scouts and parents will get to learn about the impact of the food collection we do AND get to tour the all-new facilities at the SF-Marin Food Bank. We will also be handing out door hangers at the Kickoff Party.
RSVP your unit here today! You can return to the registration page and update the expected scout and adult counts until a few days before the Kickoff Party.
Scouts BSA + Sea Scouts
Bristol UK Scout Group Collaboration Opportunity
August 13
A UK scout group would like to arrange an activity with one of our Troops, where we explore differences and similarities and perhaps swap ideas for activities and games by creating and sharing short videos of Troop activities and comparing across cultures. More information about the Troop can be found here. Please contact Paul Lanzi if your Troop is interested.
National Outdoor Award Program
Did you know that BSA has a special National Outdoor Award Program? For scouts that excel in outdoor participation, this is the award to get! Scouts in Scouts BSA, Sea Scouts and Venture can earn the award and any of the six available segments: Camping, Aquatics, Conservation, Hiking, Riding and Adventure. Learn more about this special program here.

Recruitment season is one of my favorite times of the Scouting year. There are three things I love about recruiting:
1. It's a chance to connect with prospective parents who used to be scouts themselves. Watching a parent tell me about how impactful scouting was to their own development, as they stand besides their (prospective scout) child reminds me of how much scouting has meant, and does mean, to me.
2. The full-on, mouth-agape, big-eyed SHOCK that prospective scouts express when they learn that they can earn cool badges, patches, belt loops and more for having fun with friends (and learning a few scouty lessons along the way).
3. Infusion of new parent-volunteer energy at the start of the scout year. New volunteers come with new ideas and new ways of delivering a great scouting program. Be open to the newness -- great ideas come from all places!
But recruiting can also be a stressful time -- in addition to getting your unit activities going, you also need to run a Join Night event and answer a LOT of questions from prospective parents. Two ways we can help you:
Check out the new Recruiting Resources page on our District website -- from logos to top tips for Join Night, we have some San Francisco-specific guidance as well as links to the Council and National resources. Very helpful!
For Troops/Ships, leverage the Post Cub Scout Questionnaires you already completed. These questionnaires have answers to the top questions that parents ask -- just send them a link to your answers!

Camp Tamarancho Needs Your Help
During the winter of 2023, a major slide undermined Iron Springs Road -- the only paved road into Camp Tamarancho in Marin County. A frequent destination for scout groups from all nearby Councils, the lack of access to Camp Tamarancho has already had -- and continues to have -- a big impact on local scouting. Marin Council is trying to raise $450,000 to shore up the road, but even that might not cover the full amount of the work required.
Across the Golden Gate Area Council, we're at 70% complete towards the Council-wide goal of $635,000. This represents an improvement of just 2% since last month.
Contact Keith Bauer, District Executive, for more information about FOS or click here to donate today! Feel free to forward this on to friends and family, who may be interested in contributing to scouting.
