Golden Gate District Leader Updates

January 2025

Supporting Los Angeles

Many of you have reached out to ask how we can support those affected by the wildfires in Los Angeles and Ventura counties. Sadly, thousands of families -- including scout families -- have lost their homes in these destructive fires.  The following resource sites have been vetted and confirmed; as always, be wary about fundraising links shared on social media.

Western Los Angeles County Council (WLACC) Fundraiser

WLACC lost their camp, Camp Josepho, to the Palisades fire.  The camp was a complete loss, but thankfully there were no injuries.  Consider donating to the WLACC fundraiser.

Adopt-a-Scout Family Program

If your unit is willing and able to adopt a Scouting family in need, please complete the form below. The mission here is to make sure families receive tailored assistance that meets their individual and immediate needs; this program is organized by the WLACC and the Greater Los Angeles Council (GLAC): Adopt-a-Scout Family form.

This email goes to all registered adult leaders in the Golden Gate District (San Francisco/Daly City). Want an easy way to share this with others who may be interested?

Our most sincere congratulations to Mike Otani, recently named as a 2025 recipient of the Silver Beaver Award. The Silver Beaver Award is awarded to adults within a local council who have demonstrated exceptional service and made a significant impact on the lives of youth through their contributions to Scouting. Mike meets every single word of that definition, and we are proud to call him a Golden Gate District scouter. We look forward to honoring Mike (and other award recipients) at the March 11 2025 District Recognition Dinner.

NEW: Scout Trash the Trash Day

    May 3, 2025

Scouts Trash the Trash Day is an international Messengers of Peace project for Scouts around the world, where each Scout is challenged to bring a friend or family member along and pick up at least one Kilo (2.2 pounds) of trash each on the first Saturday in May.

The idea for Scouts Trash the Trash Day came from the scouts of Troop 1206 in Helena, Montana after realizing that there are several days throughout the year that Scouts get together and do the same thing on the same day. Days like Jamboree on the Air and Internet, Jamboree on the Trail, Trees for the World, World Neckerchief Day, but there was not a day for Scouts to all get together and clean up their communities. Thus Scouts Trash the Trash Day was started. Scouts are asked to bring a non-scout with them on this day of service in order to double the impact of their trash cleaning effort.

Scouts Trash the Trash Day is about more than just cleaning our planet, it is a day to show the world what Scouting is about, educate individuals about Scouting and recruit new boys, girls and adults into the Scouting movement.

    AOL Crossing Over

The Order of the Arrow is Scouting America's official Honor Society. Our local chapter of the OA, Royaneh Chapter, is happy to help AOL Den Leaders by performing the AOL Crossing Over Ceremony at your Crossing Over event. In addition to being a meaningful experience for our AOL scouts and their families, this also gives the AOL Den Leaders a (well earned!) chance to enjoy the moment their scouts officially leave the Cub Scout program and take their next step on their scouting journey.

Featured this month: Brian Woo, District Executive

Hello my name is Brian Woo and I am honored to be your District Executive for the Golden Gate District. I joined the council back in December and this is my first time experiencing scouting. A little about myself: I was born in Wichita, Kansas and moved to the Bay Area when I was 7 years old. I went to school in Oakland and graduated from Skyline High School. I graduated from Cal State East Bay with a B.A. in Philosophy. I have worked in the non-profit sector for over 15 years. Other facts about me: growing up I was in Army JROTC, chess was my favorite hobby and I am a Life Member of Alpha Phi Omega.

    Goals for the District:

    1. Together we will grow membership and units in our District. I will work with all of you and support this effort in reaching this goal.
    2. I will visit every unit and get to know all of you!
    3. Feel free to reach out to me! My goal is to be available to you all so feel free to reach out. Brian.woo@scouting.org

I hope to see each and every one of you soon!

    Yours in Service,
