District-Wide Fall Recruiting Event - Scout Zone @ Sunday Streets
October 15
Mark your calendars! We have partnered with SF Sunday Streets to secure a whole city block during the Excelsior Sunday Streets (Oct 15) event for our 'Scout Zone'. Each unit is being asked to run a fun, youth-engaging activity to show off the best side of scouting -- and to recruit new scouts. Larry Morales (District Membership Chair) and Paul Lanzi (District Commissioner) have been reaching out to units to discuss their participation; if you haven't heard from us yet, you will soon!

Troop 29's Journey to Japan
July 19
After two years of waiting and over a year of planning, twenty-three Scouts and five Scouters completed our two-week epic quadrennial journey throughout Japan. A journey that led the Troop 29 through various cities, temples, and shrines...creating new friendships within and outside the troop.
A summary of highlights would take a book to describe. There’s just so much to digest in this once-in-a-lifetime journey. Words and pictures provide only part of the story as we process all the moments we got to experience, including all the oohs and awes; as well as reflect on the impact each of us hopefully made on each other; supporting each other to be brave, strong, and learning that asking for help is not a sign of weakness.
Below is a picture of Troop 29 and our good friends from the Scout Association of Japan - Hachioji District (Hachioji is a suburb of Tokyo).
Explorer Post 335 Wins Big at Central Valley Explorer Competition
June 23
Golden Gate District's CHP Explorers, Post 335, competed at the Central Valley Explorer Competition on June 23. Out of the 15 scenarios that the Explorers took on, our Post 335 won 1st place in two scenarios and 2nd place in one scenario. The scenarios replicate real-world situations that law enforcement officers might encounter, and the Post trains year-round for this competition.
The San Francisco Sea Scout Ship 22 "Corsair" and Ship 100 "Viking" have just wrapped up their series of week-long day camps, focused on getting kids ages 11-15 out on the water and interested in joining Sea Scouts or the Maritime Explorer Club Makani. Campers were able to sail, kayak, canoe, and row small boats, as well as learn about the bay and the activities Sea Scouts do every week. Camp this year brought in over 30 campers to the Sea Scout base and on the water, over 1/3 of whom have gone on to join the Ships or Explorer Club Makani.
Memorial Day Flag Planting
May 27
We had another successful Memorial Day flag planting this year with more than 30,000 flags placed in less than 2 hours. Here are some photos from the annual flag planting event at the San Francisco National Cemetery; you can learn more about the history of Memorial Day in this Youtube video, created by Pack 345 Den Leader Bryan McDonald.
If your unit participated in the Flag Planting event, please remember to record your service hours in Internet Advancement!
Troop 333 Hike
April 14
Troop 333 recently embarked on a challenging but memorable 20-mile hike. We started at the San Francisco Ferry Building, hiked along the Embarcadero, through Aquatic Park and Crissy Field, then across the Golden Gate Bridge before taking the Coastal Trail out to Pt. Bonita Lighthouse. We then headed back along a series of Headlands trails (crossing over both the Baker and Robin Williams Tunnels) before descending into Sausalito. We returned via ferry to our starting point.
If you're looking for a great day hike, this one is varied with many points of interest along the way, iconic landmarks, and numerous incremental goals. It also starts and finishes right here in town which makes it ideal for a day hike of this length.
Featured this month: Robin Praeger, District Chair
Asking for money is never the best way to introduce oneself, nonetheless, I wanted to use this month’s Key 3 Corner and my first note as the new District Chair to briefly discuss FOS (Friends of Scouting) and update you on 2023 GGD progress. First let me offer heartfelt thanks to all who have already made this year a success. To date, Golden Gate District is well above its 2023 target and has exceeded the amount raised all of last year. For that accomplishment, we as a district should be extremely proud and the Council is very appreciative.
However, a deeper look at the district shows that to date only a handful of units have contributed and a few individuals have moved the needle. Our goal is to have participation by 100% of the units and broad participation by our scouting families as they see fit. The campaign runs through the end of the year, allowing all those who have not yet participated to still make their donations.
Fortunately, GGD has a donor who recently made a challenge gift to FOS and ScoutReach on behalf of the district of up to a $10,000 match. By targeting 100% unit participation, I hope that we can optimize the matching gift and build momentum and resources for scouting going forward. We will reach out to each unit leader and or FOS chair this August who has not had their unit participate in pursuit of this participation goal.
In the coming issues, we will report back to you the progress towards 100% participation.
Robin
