Planned by our District plus CHP, SFPD, SFFD and with participation from more than two dozen organizations, the event was a huge success! Check out the video reel created by SFFD. Next year's event will be even bigger and better! Thank you to everyone who helped make this year's event a huge success!

Alaska Airline Aviation Day at SFO for Council Scouts

On a typical cold and overcast morning at the San Francisco Airport a few weeks ago, 143 Golden Gate Area Council scouts signed up to attend the first Alaska Airlines Aviation Day at SFO.

Alaska Airlines coordinated an interactive learning experience about the aviation industry for the next generation of pilots, flight attendants, air traffic controllers, engineers, mechanics, dispatchers, and military and aerobatic pilots. Actual airline employees, firemen, police, and FAA employees told stories and answered questions toward scouts earning their Aviation Merit Badge. Scouts also saw and handled aviation equipment seldom seen by the public. All scouts actually got into the cockpit without being arrested, climbed into the cargo bay, sat in the planes and helicopters, learned hand signals to direct planes, and punched the lights and sirens on the various police emergency vehicles.

Troop 1, which had 40 participants, reported that all their scouts enjoyed this really fun and informative day coordinated by Alaska Airlines. They even ate airline snacks.

          Key 3 Corner

Featured this month: Paul Lanzi, District Commissioner

Hi from the Key 3 Corner!

We recently received a number of updates from the National Meeting -- including survey data on what it is that keeps kids in scouting. I took a moment to draft up a possible Scoutmaster Minute for you to use with your unit. Feel free to borrow whatever you'd like from it, substitute in your own anecdote or change entirely!

          Dear Scouts,

Tonight, I want to talk to you about something that lies at the heart of our scouting experience: the incredible power of connection. We recently came across a national survey that revealed the number one reason why kids like you continue to be a part of scouting. Can you guess what it is? ...

Read the rest of the Scoutmaster Minute on the GGD website to find the answer!

Across the Golden Gate Area Council, we're at 61% complete towards the Council-wide goal of $635,000. The FOS campaign ends on June 30, so donate soon!
