Roundtable Tuesday

November 19 2024

Roundtable time! We had a great Roundtable in October, held in-person at West Portal Lutheran. We discussed Managing Volunteers, Coaching volunteer adult leaders within your organization -- lots of great ideas exchanged.

This month we'll be talking about Youth Protection -- and we'll have Brian McGuire from the Council office on hand to answer all of the tricky "what if" questions.

This month's meeting will be on Zoom: Zoom link

Tuesday, November 19 at 7pm

See you there!

Renewal 2025 Logo 2 _ 400

IMPORTANT: Unit and Member Renewal - December 31 Deadline!

The recharter process is no more; units and members must follow the new Renewal processes. Units must complete the Unit Renewal by 12/31 in order to avoid being disbanded -- and we recommend completing as soon as possible.

Our Council Registrar is very backed up on emails, so please include Rudy Gonzalez (Rudy.Gonzalez@scouting.org) on any emails where you need Registrar assistance.

For general questions about the renewal processes, contact your Unit Commissioner for assistance, or Paul Lanzi, if you don't have a Unit Commissioner.

EVENT RECAP: KPIX Tour

Scouts from several units from across San Francisco spent the day with the stars of CBS station KPIX5 learning about everything to do with TV broadcasting - putting together news stories, editing, learning about the future of broadcast news media. Thank you to Jon Gillespie and our friends at KPIX for organizing this great tour!

EVENT RECAP: Scouting for Food

November 9 and 16

Scouting for Food was another GREAT success this year! We collected 10,000 lb (5 TONS!) of food for the SF-Marin Food Bank, and while we're still tabulating the final donation amount, we easily exceeded last year's total donation. We had two new collection areas this year: Troop 415 started a new collection area in the Bayview and Troop 333 in Diamond Heights.

Thank you to everyone who made this event happen this year, including Francois Chadwick as the District Scouting for Food Chair.

REMINDER: Help Rebuild the Dog Patch Cabins @ Camp Herms

Nov 23, Dec 7 and Dec 14

We will be working with the NorCal Carpenters Union to rebuild the Cabins to provide all Council Scouts with an awesome space to come and spend time, go on their first camp out, and enjoy the space we have so close to us.

Given we will be rebuilding 7 cabins at once and with the amount of materials and equipment being used, and moved around we feel it is safest to limit participation to scouts ranked Star and above at this stage.

All scouts who help and wish, can work to earn their American Labor Merit Badge as well.

Red ribbon week patch

Reminder: Red Ribbon Week (anti-drug activity) with Free Patch

Red Ribbon Week: October 23-31; program runs through November 30

The DEA Red Ribbon Patch Program is designed to provide Scouts the opportunity to earn a patch from the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) by engaging in anti-drug activities in celebration of Red Ribbon Week. The purpose of the Patch Program is to empower young people to engage with their community through drug-free activities and strengthen their anti-drug beliefs.

DEA will award a Red Ribbon Patch and Certificate of Participation to qualifying Scouts (while supplies last)! Check out the Scout Leader Toolkit for items you'll need to complete the program.

This course fulfills the requirements for Scouts BSA - Second Class Rank - Requirement 7c.

Thank you

I wanted to express my appreciation to the GGD Scouting leaders.

This week I was again reminded of the great program for GGD youth by no one other than my dentist.  As I “relaxed” into the chair I asked her about her kids.  While she commenced her work, she excitedly shared that her son had just started in Scouts.  She asked if I knew anything about the program but without pausing for an answer proceeded to tell me about how great scouts was and his new uniform, marching in the Veteran’s Day parade, the older scouts leading him by both example and instructions.  Eventually, she took a breath and took the instruments out my mouth allowing me to reply that in fact yes, I did have some familiarity with the program.

Earlier in the month while walking on 24th street I ran into Scouts raising money for Scouting For Food.  From others I heard JOTA (Jamboree On The Air) and the unique experience offered to over 70 youth.  The Veterans Day Parade and the Fleet Week BBQ at the Sea Scout Base were also fantastic.  We have a thriving program in GGD and continue to build it with your leadership.

As a District we have advanced in our support of the Council's Strategic Plan --  comprised of Membership, Service, Training and Finances.  We appreciate the push for training and recording the service hours.  Popcorn sales have improved this year over last and ideally next year we can build off this foundation.  Our District has not yet met our financial support objective.

We will be holding breakfast at the Presidio Golf Course Nov 21st and have invited non scouting guests to hear about the program and donate.  Several GGD units have yet to participate in 2024 and as we enter this season of giving, I ask you to remind some of your families to donate as well.  Our Council continues to work hard financially, but relies on donations to close the funding gap.

Thanks for all you do.

Robin
